Gyeongju is one of those cities where where you stay really shapes your travel experience. For first-time visitors, especially those coming from overseas, choosing the right area can make the difference between a relaxed cultural getaway and a slightly inconvenient one.

If you’re planning your first trip to Gyeongju, accommodation choices usually come down to two main areas: the Bomun Lake resort area and the Hwangridan-gil neighbourhood. Although Gyeongju is not a large city, its attractions are spread out. These two areas offer very different travel styles, even though both are popular and well-reviewed.

This guide will help you understand:

  • the difference between these two areas
  • their pros and cons
  • and which type of traveller each area suits best

Staying in the Bomun Lake Area

The Bomun Lake area(보문단지) is where you’ll find most of Gyeongju’s large hotels and resorts. It was originally developed as a tourism complex and feels calm, spacious, and well-organised.

What it’s like

  • Quiet and relaxing atmosphere
  • Scenic lake views and walking paths
  • Spacious rooms and full hotel facilities

Pros

  • Ideal for a restful stay
  • Comfortable for longer stays
  • Good choice if you value hotel amenities (restaurants, lounges, gardens)

Cons

  • Not walkable to most historical sites
  • You’ll rely on taxis or buses for sightseeing
  • Less “local street life” nearby

Best for:

  • Families or travellers with seniors and children
  • Couples looking for a relaxed retreat
  • Travellers renting a car or prioritising comfort over location

Staying near Hwangridan-gil

Hwangridan-gil(황리단길) is Gyeongju’s most popular neighbourhood among younger travellers and first-time visitors. It’s known for its cafés, small shops, and traditional-style streets, blending history with a modern vibe.

What it’s like

  • Lively during the day, atmospheric in the evening
  • A mix of traditional hanok-style buildings and modern cafés
  • Feels walkable and immersive

Pros

  • Many major sights are within walking distance
  • Easy access to cafés, restaurants, and photo spots
  • Great for experiencing Gyeongju’s historic centre at a slow pace

Cons

  • Accommodation tends to be smaller and simpler
  • Can be busy on weekends
  • Less suited if you prefer resort-style comfort

Best for:

  • First-time visitors to Gyeongju
  • Solo travellers and couples
  • Those who enjoy walking, cafés, and local neighbourhoods

Google Map

On the left side of the map, the area highlighted with a red circle is Hwangridan-gil. Many of Gyeongju’s major attractions — including Cheomseongdae Observatory, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, the Gyeongju National Museum, and the Daereungwon Tomb Complex — are located nearby, making this area ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

The red circle in the centre of the map marks the Bomun Lake area, where most large hotels and resorts are concentrated.

The yellow area in the lower right of the map shows where Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto are located. As these sites are a bit farther from the city centre, it is recommended to visit them together as a half-day or full-day trip.
